Republican lawmakers in Florida banned schools from teaching critical race theory. But what exactly is critical race theory? And why should it be banned in schools? Rather than explain it myself, I'm going to let Florida Governor Ron DeSantis give you an overview.
"The decision to ban critical race theory education is an important one to safeguard our children. Like evolution, vaccinations, and climate change, the theory simply doesn't make any sense. Just because America was historically racist doesn't mean that we are still suffering the effects of racism on our laws and institutions as this theory would suggest.
"Think about it like this. If I broke my leg yesterday, would it mean I have trouble walking today? Absolutely not! The two things are completely unrelated. We can't have our children thinking that some people in this country still have leg pain. In fact, if critical race theory education was permissible, it would teach children, 'the country is rotten and that our institutions are illegitimate.' (<-- actual quote). So, rather than recognize our country's flawed past, we must blind ourselves to ensure we can never improve."
Thanks, Governor. It's no wonder Florida has one of the 50 best literacy rates in the US.
