A message from Exalted Ruler, Bill McGovern PER

Hello everyone,

I hope everyone is drying out from July! I have been writing long messages to you for the last couple of months.

This last month has been very busy and I will try to keep this as brief possible while getting the needed information to you.

To do this some informational details will be covered in separate sections.

Please be sure to read the sections Grand Lodge Convention Information, as well as the upcoming events section.

Congratulations to our members! Because of your generosity, we met our ENF goal from your donations. This will allow us to fund-raise for the many other areas in the lodge. Thank you to those of you helping out around the lodge. We are open! We need people to get involved at the lodge, but also in our programs. Take a minute and pull out your membership card. I’ll wait. Look at the back and select a program you are interested in and let me know what you are interested in. We will soon be moving forward under the Trustee’s guidance with making the upstairs bar ready for opening. Please contact the Trustees or me if you are interested and able to assist.

We have been supporting the Meriden Soup Kitchen recently. One of the needs for them is, believe it or not, soup. We will be placing a container at the lodge for members to place cans of soup for donation. Any help would be appreciated.

A shout out to the members, who wish to remain anonymous, who have made the front of the lodge building look nice. The new plants, flags, and watering system make the face of the lodge look inviting.

Please support our upcoming bus safari, lodge picnic, and golf tournament. Refer to the upcoming events and Friday night social sections for dates and detailed information.

The final item is the recent passing of a couple of our members. One, Jack Cerrato PER, was the first member to pass whom I've known personally during my term(s) as ER. Jack served our lodge in several capacities and recently had come back right before the restricted times and took an active part in the lodge. Jack, and Thomas Korab (both passing in July) as well as life member John Neville passing in March are the most recent members lost. They shall have their names inscribed upon the tablets of love and memory. To our absent members.

GRAND LODGE CONVENTION INFORMATION

As required by the Grand Lodge I will give you a brief summary of the Grand Lodge Convention. First, I would like to thank you allowing me to represent the lodge in Tampa. The City of Tampa was a great host and, while we danced with hurricane Elsa, the Convention was interesting. A summary of the proceedings is located in the Grand Lodge section of the Antlers. Important items to discuss here include some of the resolution results. Effecting the local lodges are:

To allow the Grand Exalted Ruler to grant full membership in the Grand Lodge to Past Exalted Rulers, otherwise qualified, who are prevented from attending a Grand Lodge Convention by reason of the convention having been cancelled or in the event a convention fails for lack of a quorum. 90% in favor
To codify the policy of preventing the over service of alcohol and to require Local Lodges to establish a House Rule consistent therewith. 84% in favor
To remove redundant requirements on the secretary for form submissions to CLMS. 95% in favor
Remove bonding for treasurer if covered by insurance. 92% in favor.

Another item that was approved was an increase in Grand Lodge assessment by $10 over the next two years. This is secondary to several large judgments against the Elks.We also had our new DDGER installed. She is Wanda Reiff PER from Waterbury Lodge #265. DD Reiff has already assigned us her audit date of October 20, 2021, and her visitation of October 28, 2021.

The Sunday evening opening session covered the Parade of the state Flags, a presentation on the Elks Pearl Harbor Park support. The purpose is to preserve the park. You can find more information by clicking HERE. We then had presentations on the Elks “Charities at Work” that included Veterans Service, Drug Awareness, Hoop Shoot (celebrating its 50^th anniversary this year), and grants and scholarships information. The evening finished up with a speech from GER Ryan and entertainment and fireworks outside the convention center. On Monday morning, the first day business session officially opened for business a the GER annual report was presented followed by several GL committee reports including presentation of the resolutions presented for voting later in the convention. The nominations and elections of the Grand Lodge Officers with the selection of T. Keith Mills, of Caldwell ID, as Grand Exalted Ruler for 2021-2022. GER Elect Mills gave his acceptance speech with the year’s theme of “Meeting the Challenge”. The announcement of the 2025 convention site was revealed as Kansas City MO
The second day legislative session on Tuesday with reports from the Board of Grand Trustees, Grand Forum & Pardon Committee, Resolution voting, Disaster Relief fund, Auditing & Accounting, Activities, Government Relations, and Fraternal Committees’ reports. The results of the voting were presented HERE. Also presented was the 2022-2023 dues would be fixed at $24.00—$6.50 for the Grand Lodge, $12.00 for the insurance assessment, and $5.50 for The Elks Magazine. This represented a $5 increase in insurance costs, which was made necessary by a series of high-cost judgments. He also indicated that a second $5 increase is likely to be necessary next year.
The Third Day of business was delayed because of Hurricane Elsa. The session started with the Memorial Service and installation of the new Grand Lodge Officers. Many special presentations were made followed by the closing.
Overall, the information presented was useful and the ability to network with other Elks will allow us to continue the great works provided to the community and our members.

House Committee

To our members,

The house committee would like to thank everyone for their continued support. We are looking forward to moving upstairs in the fall and hopefully going back to more normal hours. I would like to remind everyone that the hall is available for rental, also there is a hall rental scheduled for Saturday August 14th, and we would ask all members going on the bus trip to please speak with Andrea or Bill about parking. The Hall Rental will be using the ENTIRE back lot, as well as the doctor's lot and the front street for parking.

Veterans

The project to furnish the community room at Hanover Place Veterans Housing began in October of 2020, carried on through covid and with related pandemic delays, has finally come to an end this July of 2021.

This project involved the help of so many Elks, between visiting the site and doing such things as moving donations that were collected and stored, filling the project room delivering those items to each individual apartment and staging them in the appropriate room or area, to the discussions, the planning,as well as offering ideas and guidance.

Hanover Place was designed to assist and house 9 HOMELESS OR AT RISK OF BEING HOMELESS Veterans and their families as needed, and in some cases offering a much needed place to allow for visitations with their minor children that they were unable to do prior to having an actual place of residence. This project will serve to help many more Veterans, their caseworkers, Nurses, and other visitors over its lifespan than just the initial residents themselves.
This project was a success for our lodge, in that it has given these Veterans a place to relax while doing laundry, associating with their neighbors, and meeting with others in a comfortable and safe space other than their private homes when they so desire. This project also gave our lodge some positive exposure as the opening of this housing unit included the governor and was covered by the local news channels with the Elks being mentioned as donors during the televised press conference. Every individual we have spoken to during this project could not say enough about how great it has turned out, most importantly of those, being the residents themselves.

A Few Words From Our Loyal Knight

Members all,

Hello! I hope this message finds you and your families safe and healthy. I was recently asked to submit something for our Antlers and I thought I would take a moment to explain what the Elks means to me. My journey into Elkdom began at an early age. As a child, I was fortunate to participate in events facilitated by our Lodge – these included the Hoop Shoot, Soccer Shoot, and Drug Awareness campaign, to name a few. Although I was young, it was clear to me that our Lodge cared about our community. Lodge members took great pride in providing us with activities that benefitted youth and taught us how to be good, responsible citizens. Our Lodge’s commitment to our community, the principles of our Order, and each member to one another led to my father joining our Lodge. I remember my father participating in events over the years and seeing the joy in his face when he talked about volunteering. Also, the friendships he established with his brother and sister Elks became everlasting. Fast forward to my 20’s and I knew it was my time to join our great organization. I was overjoyed to have my father sponsor me into an Order that he cared so much about. I wanted to give back to our community and our Lodge, to give thanks for the opportunities I was given as a child and allow others to experience the same. I also found everlasting friendships along the way, people who I will always refer to as family. That is what we as Elks are – a family of brothers and sisters who have a common bond in the principles of Elkdom. We care about giving back. We have passion for everything the Elks stand for - our community, its children, our Veterans, as well as the tenets of our Order - Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity. We dedicate ourselves to this great country and to its symbol, the American flag. Along our Elk journey, we bring others into the fold who share those same beliefs, thereby continuing the tradition of passing along this powerful message. I carried on that tradition not long ago when I sponsored my mother as a member of the Order. Now, my whole family are members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and our amazing Lodge #35. Let me close by reminding you that your Lodge is open and great things are happening. Please consider attending an upcoming event and visiting the Lodge very soon. I hope you will stop by and connect with your brother and sister Elks. We look forward to seeing you!
