Edition 45: Who Are You Wearing?

It's almost October! At this time last year, I was stuck at home amidst a global pandemic. This year, I'm... well, never mind.

Thanks for taking a break from watching football to read my silly little newsletter. With that, let's dive into this week's news!

Week in Review

The South Has Fallen Again: In Virginia, Robert E. Lee was finally taken down. That was in Appomattox in 1865. For some reason, it took another 156 years for his statue to come down in Richmond. Though many wanted it to stand forever, it was truly a statue of limitations.

The Emmys: The annual, TV-based awards show returns tonight for it's 73rd time. When asked about what he was most looking forward to in this evening's Emmys, one fan explained, "Oh, is that tonight?"

A Sincere Thank You: Hospitals around the country are once again overflowing with Covid-19 patients. 86% of those patients are unvaccinated. To all my friends working in healthcare, I'd like to sincerely say, "Thank you." That means you, Michael, Lauren, and Maddy.

SPONSORED BY COMEDIANS IN COFFEE GETTING CARS

Your next favorite Netflix original

Jerry Seinfeld is back with his best show yet: Comedians In Coffee Getting Cars. Watch comedy legends plod through caffeine-flooded dealerships in search of the best prices. Jack Black compares deals amidst an ocean of cappuccino. Adam Sandler negotiates while swimming through Nespresso. John Oliver haggles through a sea of horchata. Each episode ends with Jerry making fun of the other comedians. Fair warning: there are some pretty dark roasts.

Didn't You See The Dress Code?

Image description

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez grabbed headlines at last week's Met Gala where she wore a dress with the phrase, "Tax the Rich" printed on the back. Many have called AOC's move hypocritical, citing the fact that a Met Gala ticket costs $35,000. However, critics shouldn't be surprised at the Congresswoman's bold yet confusing look as she's pulled similar stunts countless times this year. Let's take a look.

Image description

Two weeks ago, AOC donned a similar dress as she waited in line to be airlifted out of Afghanistan.

Image description

In July, AOC traded the dress for a space suit, but kept the text. Jeff Bezos declined to comment on AOC's attire.

And finally, while everyone was talking about the statement on the back of her dress last week, the front also had something to say.

Answer Below

Comics Described

Artists get all the credit for a good comic strip, but I think it’s the writing that really makes or breaks them. To really focus on the writing, I’ve removed those pesky cartoons and will simply explain the comic strip. I think this will create a much more enjoyable experience for the reader.

Strange Brew by John Deering for September 19, 2021

We have a single panel cartoon today. A sign on the wall says Waiting Room. A nurse stands in the front of the room holding a clipboard. She looks at the two patients who are sitting on couches, reading coffee table magazines. The nurse states, "I don't have all day. Would one of you please tell me who got here first?!" It turns out the two patients are a chicken and... you guessed it... an egg! HA! A new take on an age old question. How refreshing.

Where's Waldo Answer: He's at the Met Gala, wearing the same outfit as Kim Kardashian!
