Please join us in welcoming Hannah Steen as the new Administrative Assistant for the Iron Horse Arts District!

Hannah is proud to call Holdrege her hometown. She and her family have lived here for the past seven years, and she spent much of the last 10 years teaching English/Language Arts in different parts of the country (including HHS) before taking time away from teaching to be at home with her children. Recently, she has been looking for a way to be involved in the community and give back.

July Pop-Up Art Gallery:
Dan Christensen (posthumous)

Dan Christensen was a longtime Holdrege photographer, known to many for his portrait work at Christensen Photography and his years as Executive Director of the Nebraska Prairie Museum. This exhibit turns the focus to a side of Dan many haven't seen: his fine art photography — the quiet beauty he found in nature, texture, and everyday objects. Curated by his wife, Sue, and family following his passing in 2024, it's a fitting tribute at the museum he once led. If you've only known Dan through his portraits, you're in for a treat.

Artist Reception:

Thursday, July 9 | 5–7 p.m.
Nebraska Prairie Museum

We will have light refreshments and the reception is free and open to the public.

Artist Bureau Spotlight: Mona Peterson

Each month, we're shining a spotlight on one of the talented artists in our new Iron Horse Artist Bureau — and this month we are proud to spotlight Mona Peterson!

Mona has been an art educator for over 40 years and has spent nearly as long creating commissioned watercolors. Her work has been featured in several community art shows, most recently a pop-up gallery show at a local brewery.

Rather than painting exact likenesses, Mona captures the moments, feelings, and emotions of a time and place, blending abstract and realistic techniques to create work that stands on its own — not simply because of who it depicts. While people are her most common subject, she doesn't consider herself a portrait painter in the traditional sense; she's drawn to the universal stories a painting can tell. Working from photographs — whether provided by a client or her own — she especially loves the contrast that outdoor lighting brings to a piece.

If you're looking for a watercolor artist for a commission, reach out to Mona to start the conversation.
