Dark Blooms: Pen-and-Ink Art by
Julie Peterson-Shea

Julie Peterson-Shea is Iron Horse Arts District's featured artist for October. See her work in the Iron Horse Art Gallery throughout the month.

This month, the Iron Horse Art Gallery features the hauntingly beautiful pen-and-ink work of Julie Peterson-Shea. Her pieces are rendered in intricate detail and rich with Victorian symbolism, so they're the perfect fit for the season.

Julie has taught art in rural Kansas for more than 30 years, while also illustrating children's books and exhibiting her work regionally and nationally. She holds an MFA in Drawing, and whether she's working in pen and ink or clay, her goal is the same: to create art that encourages thought, connection, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty found in life's darker corners.

People often ask Julie why she makes such dark, moody illustrations. Her answer is simple: it just feels right. She finds beauty in darkness, meaning in melancholy, and hope in the shadows. Her drawings draw on Victorian flower meanings, religious and secular imagery, and her own visual language, balancing beauty with decay and humor with heaviness. Each piece starts as a conversation with herself and ends as an invitation for viewers to find their own meaning.

Meet Julie: Join us for the artist reception on Thursday, October 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Iron Horse Art Gallery, 401 East Ave (gallery in the basement). Take in her intricate work, chat with fellow art lovers, and enjoy light refreshments.

Can't make it? The exhibit is open throughout October. Stop by during gallery hours or call 308-248-0001 to schedule an appointment.

Going, Going, Gone: A Recap of the Mini Mural Auction

Thank you to everyone who bid, cheered, and showed up for the Mini Mural Auction on September 18! Between online bidding and a lively live auction, the evening was a success. Clay Patton built the excitement beautifully as auctioneer, and the room had the feel of a Sotheby's auction. The quality of the art made it easy to see why.

Nearly every one of the ten original murals found a new home. Proceeds from each sale were split between the artist and the Arts District: about $700 stayed with Iron Horse to help bring more public art and programming to our community, and the remainder went back to the artists to support their continued creative work. The online auction played a big role, so thank you to everyone who bid from home.

The murals also gave the Phelps County Courthouse lawn a splash of public art while they were on display, and we'd love to do it all again next year. Stay tuned!

A huge thank you to our artists, bidders, and volunteers, and to everyone who stopped by the courthouse lawn to see the murals in person.

Mark Your Calendar: give2GROW Is Coming November 12

Mini Murals on display on the Phelps County Courthouse lawn.

Save the date! The Phelps County Community Foundation's give2GROW event celebrates its 15th year on Thursday, November 12, 2026, and we'll be inviting you to give to Iron Horse.

Our focus this year is on gallery enhancements. Early giving online starts October 12, and we'll share more details about our project and how to give very soon.

Artist Bureau Spotlight: Nancy Wiese

Each month, we shine a spotlight on one of the talented artists in the Iron Horse Artist Bureau.

This month, meet Nancy Wiese! Nancy has called Holdrege home since 2006 and has dedicated her career to inspiring creativity in young people. With a degree in art education, she began by leading children's art camps and clubs before becoming the art teacher at Holdrege High School in 2016. Fun fact: Nancy has also led painting for our crosswalk murals the past two summers.

Outside the classroom, Nancy explores her own passions through vibrant colored pencil and watercolor, often drawing inspiration from botanical gardens. Her work reflects both her love of teaching and her joy in capturing the beauty of the natural world.
